New Jersey Film Studio Planned Near Birthplace of First One

Renowned inventor Thomas Edison established the world’s first movie production studio, the Black Maria, in West Orange, New Jersey, back in 1893. Now, the city is set to welcome a state-of-the-art filmmaking facility.

The West Orange Township Council has greenlit plans for redeveloping a 12.2-acre site near the historic Thomas Edison National Historical Park, situated behind the downtown Edison Lofts apartments—the sole remaining structure from Edison’s extensive laboratory complex.

Led by Matrix Development Group, based in Monroe, New Jersey, the proposed studio project is expected to span between 150,000 and 350,000 square feet. It will include three to six production stages ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 square feet each. Matrix Development Group did not respond to a request for comment from CoStar News.
