Less than 26% of U.S. households currently have individuals working remotely for at least one day a week, marking a substantial decline from the peak of 37% in early 2021, as indicated by the most recent data from the Census Bureau Household Pulse Surveys. Only seven states and Washington, D.C. now report a remote-work rate exceeding 33%, in contrast to the mid-pandemic period when this number was 31 states along with the nation’s capital. This shift underscores the persistent efforts by many employers to encourage their workforce to return to physical offices.
Remote employees have faced criticism for potentially impacting company profits and incurring significant costs for cities, eroding their ability to negotiate telecommuting perks that they enjoyed during the initial stages of the pandemic when the job market was in their favor. Some organizations, such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc., have even declared a return to a full five-day office workweek, though there remains substantial disagreement on this within boardrooms. Nearly three out of four companies see ‘Return to Office’ (RTO) as the most probable source of leadership conflicts.
