Northfield, NJ is something of a resort town – calling itself the “Gateway to the Shore,” the City of Northfield in Atlantic County, New Jersey, is a landlocked municipality with access to Atlantic City and the Atlantic Ocean through its neighbors Linwood, Pleasantville, and Egg Harbor Township.

Its location as a stop on the way to several great beach resort towns makes Northfield ideal for filling stations, hotels, filling stations, retail stores and much more. In addition, residential properties can be quite profitable here, as many commuters to Atlantic City and Margate call Northfield home.

As of the 2010 United States Census, Northfield’s population was 8,624, an increase of 899 from the 7,725 residents counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 420 from the 7,305 individuals who resided in Northfield for the 1990 Census. This puts Northfield in 10th place among the 23 Atlantic County municipalities, between number nine Brigantine, at 9,450 residents, and number 11 Absecon with 8,411 inhabitants. As far as land area goes, Northfield – at 3.44 square miles – is the 21st largest (or third smallest) municipality in the county, between Ventnor at 20th largest (3.52 sq. mi.) and number 22 Margate with 1.63 sq. mi.

A Brief History of Northfield

During most of the 1800s, while still a portion of Egg Harbor Township, the Northfield community of Bakersville was one of America’s largest shipbuilding centers. Among those operations were ones owned by Christopher vanSant, John Somers (after whom Somers Point was named), and local jurist Daniel Baker (who lent his name to Bakersville).

Historical records from the 1830s to the 1880s describe this area of Atlantic County as a bustling seaport along the lines of Salem, Massachusetts. Northfield shipbuilders concentrated on two-masted schooners, a versatile ship that not only could sail in and out of small coastal ports along the Atlantic Ocean coast, but also make longer trips to some of the more northern ports along the South America coast.

The crafts built in these mid-19th century shipyards made their way to the ocean and their varied commercial sailing routes via a man-made ditch that was excavated from what is now Shore Road to a stream that enters the bay near what is now Hackney’s Boatyard in Egg Harbor Township.

In addition to his shipbuilding role in the Northfield area, Judge Baker is credited with being the person who named Atlantic County. As the story goes, a local physician – Dr. Jonathan Pitney of Absecon – asked Baker “Judge, what name shall we give to the new county?” The Judge stood for a moment, looked over towards the ocean, waved his hand and said “Doctor, there it is, the wide broad Atlantic Ocean. What name is more appropriate than Atlantic County?”
