For Mitch Goldenberg, the decision was clear-cut. Regardless of any return-to-office directive, it held little sway.
“I reside in a one-bedroom apartment in New York City. It becomes monotonous,” remarked the 35-year-old financial lines specialist from the insurance brokerage Willis Group, seated in Lower Manhattan’s Winter Garden, enjoying a salad on a blustery late March day. “Interacting with a coworker face-to-face for half an hour a month achieves more than an hour a week on Zoom. Companies should focus more on fostering connections. I believe these mandates breed negativity.”
Could it be that, despite the investments in wellness centers, gourmet cuisine, botanicals, recreational amenities like beehives and golf simulators, and al fresco spaces, the most potent allure to lure employees back to the office is simply the camaraderie of being around others once more? Perhaps, plain old friendship was the most compelling draw all along.
