Sidewalk sheds and scaffolding darkening Manhattan’s streets are taking a financial toll on the city. A study commissioned by New York City and conducted through Mastercard found that businesses in buildings with sidewalk sheds see monthly Mastercard spending drop by $3,900 to $9,500. Restaurants and bars are hit hardest, with a 3.5% to 9.7% decline in weekly transactions within six months of the sheds going up, according to the report released Wednesday.
