The Marlton community of Evesham Township is one of the oldest settlements in Burlington County, a sister city to its eponymous namesake in northwestern England, and the former home of a Cold War-era Nike missile base that once was part of the township’s commercial real estate market inventory.

While the formal, municipal name of Evesham Township comes from Evesham, Worcestershire, England, the name of its most well-known community – Marlton – comes from the naturally occurring mixture of green clay and seashells that was used as a fertilizer from the early 1800s to 1930 when the final marl pit in the township was closed. Several historical sources credit the discovery and use of marl for sparking a growth in local commerce in the 1830s and 1840s that started Evesham on its way to where it is today.

The settlement that came to be known as Evesham, and subsequently Marlton, was founded by a congregation of Quakers in 1672. The township – originally known as Eversham (the “r” mysteriously disappeared from the municipal name several years later) – was incorporated as a municipality in the Provence of West Jersey in 1688.

After the United States won its independence from England and New Jersey joined the union in 1787, Evesham was incorporated as one of the state’s first 104 townships. That original municipality was significantly larger than it is today as its land area included what now are the Burlington County townships of Hainesport, Lumberton, Medford, Mount Laurel, Shamong, and Washington townships.

Despite receiving its name from Evesham, England in the 17th Century, there were no formal relations between the two towns until the late 20th Century when the Evesham (N.J.) Twinning Association was created to set up a “sister city” relationship. In the nearly 30 years this arrangement has been in place, there have been many trips by members of each community’s government and civic organizations across the Atlantic Ocean to commemorate and celebrate the rich history of the two Eveshams.

Nearly seven decades ago – in 1955 – Marlton was thrust into the middle of the Cold War when the United States Army opened the PH-32 Nike Ajax facility on Tomlinson Mill Road. This 35-acre missile base was one of twelve that encircled the Philadelphia region to protect residents from Soviet bombers. At its peak, the base contained 20 anti-aircraft missiles. The base was decommissioned in the mid-1960s and the site is now the home of the Briarwood housing development.

Evesham Township, including the community of Marlton, covers 29.7 square miles to place it as the 10th largest among the 40 Burlington County municipalities. It sits between the 30-square-mile Springfield Township and the 22.4-square-mile New Hanover Township. The largest municipality, by area, in Burlington County is Washington Township, at 102.7 square miles, while the smallest is Fieldsboro Borough at a mere 0.27 of a square mile.

In terms of residents, Evesham is the most populous municipality in Burlington County with a 2010 U.S. Census population of 45,500, roughly 4,000 more than its neighbor Mount Laurel Township with 41,800. To put this in perspective, the least populated municipality in the county is also the smallest; Fieldsboro Borough has just 540 residents.
