NYC Leasing Controversy Reveals Office Surplus

New York Mayor Eric Adams’s challenges grew last month when the Manhattan district attorney launched an investigation into the agency managing the city’s $1.5 billion real estate portfolio.

On Tuesday, City Council members criticized two Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) officials over a subordinate’s decision to approve several commercial leases before vacationing with a Cushman & Wakefield broker involved in the deals. During a hearing on two of these leases, City Councilman Lincoln Restler of Brooklyn repeatedly questioned DCAS Deputy Commissioner Jesse Hamilton’s qualifications to oversee office leases and his motives in awarding contracts that benefited an Adams donor.
