Turnersville, a thriving business and residential area within Washington Township, Gloucester County, is known as “South Jersey’s Premier Community”, and serves as a midpoint of sorts between the Philadelphia suburbs and the New Jersey Shore. Turnersville commercial real estate offers a wealth of opportunities for store and restaurant owners, industrial centers, business offices and much more.
At 21.5 square miles in area, Washington Township is the fourth-largest municipality in Gloucester County, just between Logan Township at 27 square miles and Woolwich Township at 21 square miles.
The Turnersville section of the township is named for the Turner family, who were among the earliest residents of the area. The oldest community in Washington Township – Grenloch Terrace – originally was a Native American village named Tetamekon. That settlement was one of the hubs of the Leni Lenape nation, the indigenous people of the Delaware and Susquehanna river basins.
The community of Turnersville, as a part of Washington Township, is the most populous municipality in Gloucester County, with a 2010 U.S. Census population of 48,500 residents. This puts the township ahead of Monroe Township (with 36,000 residents) and Deptford (31,000).
Of those 48,500 residents, about a quarter are under 18 years of age, 10 percent are 18- to 24-years old, a quarter between 25 and 44, 30 percent aged 45 to 64, and about 10 percent are 65 or older. Just about one-third of the adult population of the township has achieved an education level of Bachelor’s Degree or better.
Turnersville is easily accessible via several state and county roads. Among the main thoroughfares that bisect Turnersville commercial real estate are the Atlantic City Expressway, the North-South Freeway (also known as NJ State Route 42), the Black Horse Pike (Route 168), and Delsea Drive (Route 47). In addition, the 42 Freeway offers access to I-295 and to two major bridges to the city of Philadelphia. Two of the more well-traveled county highways in Washington Township, Gloucester County, are Route 534 (Good Intent Road) and Route 555 (Tuckahoe Road).
There are a variety of shopping choices throughout Turnersville and Washington Township, especially along the commercial section of NJ Route 42. These include the Plaza 42 Center which features a Kohl’s department store along with a PetSmart outlet and an Ashley Furniture store; nearby Echo Plaza has an Active Fitness center and a Velocity Sports Performance store, while right down the road, you’ll find Cross Keys Commons with a Staples office supplies outlet. Also, close-by are the Whitman Square Shopping Center and several stand-alone retailers as Wal-Mart, Target, Lowe’s, L.A. Fitness, and Burlington Coat Factory. Route 42 is a well-traveled road, and businesses that set up shop here have high visibility.
Turnersville is also home to the Turnersville Auto Mall, a complex that features a dealership for most every car brand imaginable including all of the domestics like Ford and GM, as well as the foreign giants like Toyota and Nissan. The complex area lends itself well to restaurant and smaller store development, and it is located close to the area’s Walmart plaza and multiple eateries.
