Hammonton’s location, along the Atlantic City Expressway and U.S. Routes 30, 206 and 322, make it a popular stopping point for Philadelphians or other Jersey residents on their way to our multiple great resort towns. It’s ideal to set up your restaurant, gas and go, or a retail store selling various needs for drivers and families on their way to a vacation. But with 14,000+ residents, the locals have needs to be served too…and it’s ideal for a healthcare center, legal office, salon and so much more.
Hammonton currently is the sixth-most populous municipality in Atlantic County with 14,800 residents according to the 2010 Census. A Brief History of Hammonton
One of the few municipalities in the State of New Jersey operating under the “town” form of local government, Hammonton in Atlantic County is known as the “Blueberry Capital of the World”, is the birthplace of a former first lady and provided employment for a notorious Philadelphia mobster.
Hammonton was settled in 1812 and named “Hammondtown” for John Hammond Coffin, a son of one of the community’s earliest residents, William Coffin. The town’s name, over time, morphed into the current Hammonton. Interestingly, Coffin’s other son – Edward Winslow Coffin – was the founder of the neighboring settlement of Winslow, now Winslow Township in Camden County. The town of Hammonton was incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 5, 1866, from portions of Hamilton Township and Mullica Township, both in Atlantic County.
Two people who could not be any further apart on the social scale – Jill Biden and Nicodemo Scarfo – have connections to Hammonton. Jill Biden – the current First Lady – was born in Hammonton. Scarfo – a 1980s boss of the Philadelphia crime family – spent summers growing up working in Hammonton as blueberry picker. He started his career as a local amateur boxer, but – failing to break through in that pursuit – joined his uncle as a Philly mob soldier.
