Dan Thomas and Julie Frazier of Perkins & Will highlighted some of the nation’s most disruptive changes in hospital and medical architecture during a presentation at the American Institute of Architects’ annual conference in Washington, D.C. They noted that these changes were already underway when the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020, which further accelerated the urgency for healthcare property owners.
Hospitals had to quickly reorganize their layouts, including waiting and examination rooms, to accommodate coronavirus patients, according to Thomas. They also had to implement lockdown measures for patient security and convert routine patient wings into isolation areas.
