Voorhees Commercial Real Estate

Voorhees Commercial Real EstateVoorhees is a leader in the Camden County Commercial Real Estate Market. Voorhees Township, named for the Governor of New Jersey when the town was created at the end of the 19th Century, is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Camden County in terms of population, and it plays a major role in the region’s medical community and commercial real estate market.

A Brief History of Voorhees

The word “voorhees” is Dutch and – according to the township’s municipal website – can be broken down into two parts: “voor,” a prefix meaning “in front of” and “Hees,” a small village outside the Netherlands town of De Wolden. It is believed this is the ancestral home of the family of former New Jersey Gov. Foster McGowan Voorhees.

Gov. Voorhees, the 30th chief executive of the state of New Jersey, first served as acting governor in 1898 when – as President of the state Senate representing Union County – he assumed the post when then-Gov. John W. Griggs resigned to accept the position of United States Attorney General under President William McKinley. Voorhees won the position in the general election later that year.

In March of 1899, Voorhees granted a petition from residents living in a portion of Waterford Township, Camden County, to create their own municipality. In gratitude, the residents named their newly minted township after him.

In terms of population today, Voorhees Township is the sixth-largest municipality in Camden County, but it has grown by nearly 20 percent in the last 20 years, from 24,500 in the 1990 U.S. Census to 29,100 in 2010. Its growth and evolving demographic layout suggests that Voorhees commercial real estate can be a prime choice for restaurant and store owners, as well as medical offices and facilities.

In fact, Voorhees Township is the home of South Jersey’s newest medical centers, the Virtua Voorhees hospital complex. The campus, on Bowman Drive just off Route 73, is divided into five neighborhoods – lettered A through E – to make navigating the facility easier for patients, family members, staff, vendors, and other visitors. This is particularly convenient when you consider that more than 5,600 babies a year are delivered at the facility, more than any other hospital in the region. All 370 beds at Virtua Voorhees are in private rooms and, as the hospital’s promotional material states, they provide personal space for optimum healing and are furnished to accommodate family and encourage them to be involved in the care of their loved ones.

The township of Voorhees is convenient to several major highways, making it an ideal and easily reachable spot for offices, industrial centers, hospitality destinations and more. Depending on where you are in this large municipality, you could easily get on I-295, the NJ Turnpike, U.S. Route 30 (White Horse Pike), and NJ Route 73.

Voorhees covers 11.6 square miles to place it as the sixth-largest among the 37 Camden County municipalities. It sits between the 12-square-mile Pennsauken Township and the 10.3-square-mile City of Camden.
